Walter Wellborn completed the 2016 season with a 5-4 record. Last year Walter Wellborn just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 3A region five with a 2-4 region record. The Panthers are led by head coach Jeff Smith who is entering his ninth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 55-34 over the past eight seasons at Walter Wellborn. The Walter Wellborn Panthers will play in Class 3A region five during the 2017 season. Region five will be one of the most competitive regions in any classification this season. With a little luck and some improvement, the Panthers could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region five this season. Walter Wellborn came up short of the playoffs last year but are optimistic of a return to the post season this year. The Panthers open the 2017 season at home against non-region opponent North Jackson on Thursday, August 24 at The Hill. Last year the North Jackson Chiefs finished with an overall record of 6-5 and in second place in Class 4A region seven. The Chiefs lost in the second round of the Class 4A playoffs to Hokes Bluff by a score of 24-14. This will be the second meeting between Walter Wellborn and North Jackson on the football field.
